John's been busy on the grounds working hard to meet our opening date of July 1st for the new Haiku Plantation Inn museum, located here on the grounds. Our focus is on agriculture history from ancient to modern times with displays, reference books, videos including interviews, and artifacts ranging from pre 1900 Hawaii to recent times. It has been a lot of fun collecting over all these years, and to have a place to share what we see as treasures (yet some might view as miscellaneous junk) with visitors and the community will be very rewarding.
We are using the old 1936 garage for the main exhibit space. The collection includes various discoveries found here on the grounds of old classic bottles soft drinks, milk, liquor, kerosene and including an IV bottle, remember this was a doctor’s house and office, railroad spikes, cane knives, old photos, mill stone, and even the branding iron John found out back behind the old garage. The main display case was saved from the old Maalaea general store down near the harbor, and the display centering on sugar production features the manager’s desk from the Pioneer Mill, now gone with only the smoke stack remaining. Trinkets, treasures and memories of days and eras nearly gone in Hawaii now, but Haiku is one of the remaining strong holds left for Hawaiian agriculture, now changing to sustainable practices and eco friendly folks looking towards the future.
Come on by and visit. Stay at the Inn, and enjoy Maui’s country life first hand.
A hui hou
